Our Swim Levels

Parent-Assisted

This class is all about water familiarization for the baby / toddler and parent. We want your childto feel safe and secure in the water while establishing a love of water in different positions and we will teach the parent how to do this.

This is a group class and usually will be the first structured activity that you will introduce to your child. Let’s make it fun for both you and baby!

Tadpole

Tadpoles are a transition class where students gradually move from swimming with their parent to swimming solely with their teacher. This is a foundational step for all future swimming classes. Parents are asked to wear their swimmers and be inside the pool area as they are a vital source of emotional support during this critical period of the swimming journey. Before a tadpole can become a guppy, they need to show that they’re comfortable swimming with just their teacher.

Guppy

This is the first level of learn-to-swim classes that parents are not in the pool with their child. Many of our children have progressed from our Parent and Baby/Toddler classes to the Guppy class but is not necessarily a prerequisite.

In this level we focus on teaching the children to follow directions from the teacher, to listen (as a 2 year old) and constantly building a relationship of trust between the children and teacher. Safety is always paramount so learning to follow directions and being patient is a skill that will benefit them in and out of the water.

Skills they will learn

  • Safety entries
  • Monkey along the wall assisted
  • Staying safe on the step
  • Being able to wait their turn
  • Following instructions from teacher
  • Jumping in and turning around back to the side assisted

Starfish

This can be the first level of learn-to-swim classes for those that haven’t been swimming younger than 3 years of age in a class. Many of our children have progressed from our Parent and Baby/Toddler classes to the Guppy class and move through to the Starfish level but is not necessarily a prerequisite.

In this level we step it up from the Guppy class as the child is slightly older and cognitively can focus on teacher directions and we can see more advanced, slightly faster pace classes than the Guppy class.

Skills they will learn

  • Rockets out to teacher on their front
  • Monkey along the wall unassisted
  • Improved confidence
  • Jumping in and turning around back to the side unassisted
  • Back floats unassisted
  • Correct use of kickboards and noodles and familiarization
  • Water familiarization
